Confirm the layout before rough-in
Moving a toilet, shower, bath or vanity can affect sanitary drainage, water services, floor penetrations and wall framing. Measure selected fixtures and confirm outlet positions rather than relying only on a showroom image or generic plan.
For an upper-floor bathroom, structural depth and the route to existing drainage can limit what is practical. Early review helps avoid a layout that cannot achieve the required falls or access.
Select fixtures with installation details in mind
Wall-hung pans, concealed cisterns, freestanding baths, in-wall mixers and multi-outlet showers all have different rough-in requirements. Obtain product specifications before the plumber sets pipework. Confirm whether tapware, wastes, traps, valves and mounting systems are included with the selected products.
Luxury finishes reward precision. The visible alignment of outlets, mixer bodies and fixtures depends on accurate set-out before walls and floors are closed.
Review hot water demand and temperature control
A larger bath, twin shower or additional bathroom can change peak hot water demand. The existing system, pipe sizing and available energy supply should be checked as part of the renovation rather than after the new fixtures are installed.
Some bathroom and water-heater work is regulated or notifiable plumbing work in Queensland. The QBCC explains that plumbing must be completed by appropriately licensed people and that certain work requires a Form 4 after completion. See the QBCC’s homeowner plumbing guidance.
Coordinate the trade sequence
A typical programme may include demolition, plumbing rough-in, electrical work, framing, sheeting, waterproofing, tiling, cabinetry and final plumbing fit-off. Each trade needs clear hold points. Pipework should be tested and required inspections completed before it is concealed.
Changes made after waterproofing or tiling are expensive and disruptive. Keep current drawings and product schedules available to every relevant trade.
Check the quote and handover scope
- Are demolition and disposal included or completed by another contractor?
- Who supplies fixtures, tapware, wastes and accessories?
- Does the scope cover rough-in, testing, fit-off and commissioning?
- Are wall or floor repairs and final finishes included?
- Who coordinates required plumbing documentation?
- How will variations be approved if concealed conditions are found?
